Becoming A Homeowner

(Update: Winter Haven funding only available for low and very low income categories)

Keystone works directly with low to moderate income families to secure financial assistance and provide homeowners education. We eliminate the complexity and confusion of buying a home to help families achieve homeownership.

Getting Started

To start the process, homebuyers are responsible for two key elements. First, you must qualify for a first mortgage loan through a lender. Second, you will need money for the down payment and closing costs, which is an obstacle for many homebuyers. Keystone often has down payment and closing cost assistance available through City of Lakeland SHIP, City of Winter Haven SHIP, and Polk County SHIP. For more information and funding availability, please visit our Down Payment Assistance page.

We Can Help

We’ve helped over 4,000 families achieve their dream of becoming homeowners. With more than 20 years of experience, we provide diligent and hands-on support to homebuyers requiring financial assistance. Our team works directly with homebuyers and their mortgage lender to secure specialized financial assistance. We work towards qualifying homebuyers for programs and submit necessary documentation to local government.

Your First Step

In purchasing a home, preparation is the key to becoming a successful homeowner. Our Homebuyer Education courses are offered free of charge to anyone interested in pursing the path to homeownership. The education program is certified Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and helps potential homebuyers understand the demands of homeownership and how to take advantage of financial resources. To register for a course, please click here or call 863-682-1025.

After attending the course, it’s best to consider the following costs associated with owning a home.

  • Mortgage
  • Taxes
  • Insurance
  • Repairs and Maintenance

Next, schedule an appointment with mortgage lender to be pre-qualified for first mortgage financing. To pre-qualify, certain factors will determine whether you’re qualified to purchase a home and your mortgage payment limit.

  • Total Borrower Income
  • Co-Borrower (if any)
  • Determine Total Debt
  • Credit Score

Finally, you’re prepared to begin working with a real estate agent. You will know your price range, monthly mortgage payment limit and how much it will cost to obtain the mortgage. As a pre-qualified homebuyer, you are increasing your chances of contract acceptance and buying a top-choice home.
